Homework is based on what was taught and learned in the classroom. It will be assigned a minimum of 4 days a week. Please understand that a teacher may not be able to compile homework on the same day in which your child is absent. Unless your child has an extended absence, please allow the teacher to go over missed work and homework assignments when your child returns to school.
The teacher will establish a due date for makeup assignments. Additionally, any work that has received a grade when originally given will also be given a grade when the work is made up. Homework may include long-term projects, short-term projects and assignments due the following day. Time allotted for homework does not include the agreed upon school reading times as noted in the opening day parents’ packets. There may be some exceptions to the amount of homework in the case of students who miss class work because of extra curricular activities such as orchestra and choir. The missed class work may be made up as homework. In some cases, homework may increase as an extension of class work. For example, if a student is unable to finish an assignment in class in the assigned period of time, for a variety of reasons, the student may be asked to complete the assignment for homework. This extension into homework does not fall under the time parameters we are setting aside for nightly homework.
The Magnet homework policy will reflect the following estimated times:
3rd Grade: 35-45 minutes per day
4th Grade: 35-45 minutes per day
5th Grade: 50-60 minutes per day
It is each student’s responsibility to copy down assignments daily and/or obtain missed homework upon returning from an absence. The student has the responsibility to schedule time to make up work missed in class (tests, quizzes, independent work, etc.). If a student knows that he/she will miss class in advance of the absence, the parent/student should notify the teacher and request work in a timely manner before the absence. The day before the absence is not timely.
