Dear Cowan Parent,

The faculty and staff at Cowan Avenue School would like to welcome the families new to our school.  We are looking forward to making the 2011-2012 school year the very best for all of our students.  Because of the support provided by all of the members of our school community, children, parents, teachers, school staff, administration and area residents, Cowan is a school where children come first.

Our school community is coming together in an intentional and purposeful manner to provide all of our children with the best possible education. Our efforts continue to improve the program and climate of our school and make this one of the best schools in the Westchester area.

Parents are very important in helping to maintain high standards in our school.  Cowan is an exceptional school because it brings the key elements required for an effective school: school leadership, quality teachers and supportive parents. Your participation is essential and desired, so we’d like to offer the following suggestions:

q  Come to school events and volunteer when possible. The more involved you are, the more meaningful the school experience will be to your child.

q Register on the website and bookmark the school website as one of your favorites; join Tiger Groups to receive information regarding upcoming events.  Both of these resources will keep you up to date on what's happening at your child's school.

q  Get to know your child’s teacher early!

q  Plan to meet with your child’s teacher outside of the instructional day (before the morning bell or after school) if you have questions or concerns.

q  Discuss with your child the importance of adhering to school rules and getting along well with others.

q  Ensure that your child completes his/her homework daily.

q  Remember that regular attendance and arriving to school on time are important for academic success.

Cowan exists to provide the best education possible for our children and this year we rededicate ourselves as a school community to that endeavor.

Please consider participating in one of the volunteer opportunities at Cowan.   If you don’t know where you fit in, a good place to begin is the annual “Cowan Round-up” on Friday, September 9.  You will be able to meet teachers, staff, administration, and other involved parents.  There will be food, fun and lots of information.
