    Grading Policy

Grades will be issued in accordance with the criteria set forth in the California State Standards.  To meet objectives as a gifted/high ability, international humanities magnet, there may be assignments that are aligned with standards other than the student’s grade level standard

    The grading rubric:

    4          Student exceeds the standard/objective

    3          Student meets the standard/objective

2          Student is approaching the standard/objective

1          Student is performing below the standard

0          A teacher may choose to assign a 0 to missed work that was not made up

Grades are neither punitive nor a reward.  Grades are not “given” by the teacher, but earned by the student.  They are used to measure achievement and provide feedback to a students and parents about progress in academic areas, work habits, and behavior. Students, teachers, and parent should be working together to set goals for each student’s progress.  In some cases, a grade will be assigned according to a rubric designed to meet either grade level standards criteria, or criteria set forth in the curriculum for the assignment.  In other cases, a grade will be assigned based on a percentage of correct answers out of the total number of answers.  Teachers may choose to use another rubric/percentage alignment or symbols and will notify the class, if necessary.

    The rubric and percentage alignment:

    4          90-100%

    3          75-89%

    2          60-74%

    1          0-59%

0          A teacher may choose to assign a 0 to missed work that was not made up

Teachers will regularly communicate progress to the students and parents by sending home graded and scored assignments every 2-3 weeks.  Students and parents will be expected to review the student’s work, acknowledge the review and return the work for the student’s portfolio when requested.
